Assessment for adults

Making the decision to undergo an autism assessment as an adult is a big decision. You may well have had the idea for a long time and finally feel that this is the point to get clarification of your condition and best ways to support your individual needs through reasonable adjustments.

Our services:

  • An initial assessment with a neurodiversity specialist to ascertain specific areas of strengths and needs. This is an opportunity to understand what is working and why and to consider whether further diagnostic assessment or therapeutic input is warranted. Alternatively for people where the diagnosis is already established, this strengths-based assessment can provide support at times of change in functioning or circumstance.

This usually takes 1.5 hours and feedback is given within the session. A summary report is provided.

Please see our Therapy pages to see what further support may be available following assessment.

  • Getting an autism diagnosis can help explain the patterns in life you may have found yourself repeating. Given that it is a lifelong condition, it is important to get the assessment right to provide you with understanding and control. At Autism Unravelled, our assessment is a comprehensive package, designed to accurately assess and provide in-depth information about your individual strengths and needs regardless of whether a diagnosis is given. If you think you may be autistic and you would like information or a diagnosis assessment, we can help with online support and face-to-face diagnosis. If you would like information or an assessment, please complete our online enquiry form.

    The diagnostic assessment process includes:

Pre-assessment questionnaires will be sent to you before our face to face appointment. These focus on assessing social communication skills and specific autistic traits.

Appointment with you where we assess your developmental history, social communication skills, mental health and current areas of concern or strength. We often use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) as a structured way to assess social communication skills to provide qualitative information.

Feedback from parents / partner / close friend - someone who knows you well - to find out about your current functioning and where possible to gain information on your developmental history. We use the 3Di / ADI-R adult developmental interview which is a measure of social communication and autistic traits.

Feedback from other professionals is requested with consent from you. It is helpful to include any previous assessments or information to add to our understanding.

Multidisciplinary Team discussion for clinicians to consider all of the assessment information.

Detailed assessment report is provided giving feedback on the assessment findings, a diagnosis (if appropriate) and future recommendations.

In the 1 hour feedback session a comprehensive report will be discussed and an opportunity for us to talk through the assessment report in detail, and offer much needed space for all of the ‘what next’ questions. If additional feed-back sessions or other follow-up supports are required this can be arranged at additional cost.

** Please note that undergoing a diagnostic assessment does not mean that you will receive a diagnosis**
